Designer Secrets for Creating the Perfect Design Plan
A friendly warning: Skimming the information for the visuals may lead you to overlook valuable insights. While it might seem overwhelming at first, implementing these steps will make decorating much easier, I promise! And, it will help you avoid costly mistakes too!
The Initial Design Planning Phase
Step 1: Determine The Room(s) to Decorate For Fall
Determine the room(s) you’ll be decorating for the fall season and make note of the area or surfaces you plan to add fall decor. Take all necessary measurements and photos for easy reference.
Designer Tip: Keep necessary room measurements and photos of rooms in a folder on your phone. That way, they’ll always be with you!
Step 2: Assess Current Fall Inventory
Inventory your fall decor and assess each item. Discard anything outdated, worn out, or mismatched with your style. This decluttering creates space for fresh pieces and keeps your decor current and cohesive. Donate or repurpose items that no longer fit your vision, keeping only what enhances your home’s aesthetic and brings you joy.
Designer Tip: When time allows, I recommend organizing items by season and per category of items. An example of this would be, organizing all of your fall stems together or all of your pumpkins together, etc. This will make the subsequent year’s decorating process much faster.
Step 3: Set A Decorating Budget
Now that you’ve identified the room(s) you’ll be decorating and evaluated your fall inventory, it’s time to set a budget. At this stage, think of it as a preliminary budget goal, as the final budget will be established once your design plan is complete. Establishing a preliminary budget will help identify which new items to buy, what you can reuse or repurpose from your current fall inventory, and items to explore as a DIY project.
Designer Tip: Create a wish list of items you’d like to purchase, prioritizing essentials and favorites.
Notice the subtle nod to fall? Hint…the seashells are in it!
The Design Development Phase
Step 4. Gather Fall Decorating Inspiration
Explore fresh ideas by browsing decor blogs (like mine, wink wink), social media channels, and shelter magazines. Note current decorating trends and spaces that inspire you. Save your favorites and envision how to adapt them to your home’s style and color palette. This research helps to spark new creativity, as well as keeps you updated on the latest trends.
Designer Tips: Want a great visualization and planning tool? Upload photos and create a concept design plan using PowerPoint, Publisher, or Canva. Be sure to email the design plan to yourself and save on your phone (in the same folder as above) for quick, easy reference.

Step 5: Choose A Fall Color Palette
Use your home’s existing color palette as the foundation for your fall decorating. Then, add one to three complementary trending colors for a fresh look, being careful to use them sparingly to avoid overwhelming the space.
Designer Tip: When decorating multiple social areas (living room, dining room, kitchen, and nook), use a consistent color palette for a cohesive, visually appealing look.
Step 6: Finalize Fall Decorating Plan
Now that you’ve gathered fall decorating inspiration and selected your color palette, it’s time to bring your vision to life. Begin by finalizing your decorating plan, detailing which areas of your home you will be refreshing and the types of decor items you’ll need —such as throw pillows, candles, seasonal centerpieces, etc.

Step 7: Establish Final Seasonal Decorating Budget
Once your detailed seasonal design plan in place, it’s important to establish a final budget. Review the preliminary budget goal you set in Step 3 above. Next, determine if you’ve met this goal or exceeded; adjust accordingly and allocate funds for each category on your list. This will help you prioritize your purchases and prevent overspending.
Designer Tips: If you’re on a tight budget, repurpose fall decor you already have, as most items can be painted. Additionally, if you’re considering new pillows, update the pillow covers only and using existing pillow inserts.
Design Plan Implementation
Step 8: Plan New Purchases and Select Fall Inventory to Use.
With your fall decorating plan and budget set, it’s time to shop! Start by exploring your existing fall inventory to see what items you can use or repurpose.
For new purchases, identify local store and online retailers that carry fall decor, and check for seasonal sales or promotions. Organize your wish list by store to streamline your shopping experience to ensure you don’t forget anything.
Designer Tips: Copy and insert online and local retailer product links for easy shopping. Maximize your investment spending by choosing versatile items that can be used across seasons. Shopping earlier offers a wider selection, while mid-to-late season has better deals. Don’t forget to refer to your new fall decorating plan to avoid overspending.

Step 9: Explore DIY Options / Make DIY Projects
If you’re nearing your seasonal budget expenditure but still want to achieve your fall decor vision, consider DIYing some items to save money. Wreaths and floral centerpieces are perfect DIY craft projects, as they allow customization while adding a personal touch.
Plan ahead by gathering materials so that everything is readily available as time and inspiration strike.
Designer Tips: Stick to your established style/color palette to ensure it coordinates beautifully with other autumn decor . Mix textures to create visual interest. Don’t overcomplicate it. Use zip ties to attach theme or color-specific elements, and simply cut the zip tie to remove and replace items the following season if needed.
Step 10: Time To Decorate!
Now that you’ve planned and gathered your materials, it’s time to bring your vision to life! Here’s how to make the most of your decorating session:
1. **Set the Mood**: Create a comfortable atmosphere with music, fresh air, or seasonal candles.
2. **Organize Your Space**: Lay out all decor items to visualize how they work together.
3. **Start with Focal Points**: Focus on key areas like the mantel, dining table, or entryway to establish a strong foundation.
4. **Layer Textures and Heights**: Mix textures and heights in your arrangements for depth, like combining tall candlesticks with low pumpkins.
5. **Keep It Balanced**: Distribute colors and shapes evenly, stepping back frequently to assess the overall look.
6. **Final Touches**: Assess the space. Take a photo. Does it look too busy? Does it need something else? Edit and repeat until you’re satisfied.
7. **Step Back and Enjoy**: Admire your work and capture the moment with photos.

Did You Know?…
The latest trend in decorating is quiet luxury, a preference that has always resonated with me for both everyday and seasonal decor. What’s beautiful about this trend is its versatility—it can seamlessly enhance any design style. The secret to achieving a chic and sophisticated quiet luxury ambience lies in the subtleties.
5 Ways to Effortlessly Achieve Quiet Luxury This Fall
- Commit to Subtle Fall Touches – Subtle fall decor touches add an air of sophistication that has timeless and classic appeal.
- Choose One Focal Point Per Room – Selecting a single focal point per room is crucial or several reasons: (1) it ties the room together by providing a visual anchor that unifies the design elements; (2) it enhances the aesthetics of the space by drawing attention to a specific area; (3) it helps with furniture arrangement, making it easier to create a balanced and harmonious layout; and (4) it sets the mood and tone of the space.
- Embrace Nature’s Seasonal Foliage – Incorporating seasonal foliage can instantly elevate your decor. And it’s easy to do! A simple DIY centerpiece of colorful leaves, acorns, twigs, and maybe a pumpkin or two helps set the dining mood.
- Add Warmth & Texture – Crank up the cozy factor of any space by layering textiles in various fabrics and patterns. Add handmade or artisanal items, like pottery or woven baskets.
- Enhance The Mood With Thoughtful Lighting – Use soft, ambient lighting to create a warm atmosphere. Incorporate elegant light fixtures and consider dimmers to adjust brightness for different mood.
