Now onto My Family Christmas 2017 Home Tour. But first…Can you believe 2017 is almost over?

Before I jump right in with my Christmas Decor, can we just take a moment and acknowledge that 2017 flew by in a hurry? Seriously though! Wasn’t it just Memorial Day and the Fourth of July? I wish I had pause button or a magic wand to make time slow down, because each year seems to go by faster than the last. Does anyone else feel this way too?

Family Room

I’m keeping things somewhat simple this year. And by simple, I mean…a Christmas Tree, Mantel Decor, Table Settings, and a few other holiday touches. I may add garland on the staircase banister, but not sure since my schedule is pretty hectic at the moment.

I typically place our Christmas Tree in the hallway by our curved staircase, just off the dining room, but this year I decided to put it in our family room so we could enjoy looking at it all season long. And I have to say, that I love it in here! I do wish it was a bit more narrow, as well as flocked, but sometimes you just have to work with what you have on hand. Right?

Over the years, my Santa collection has grown, so this year I decided that our 9′ prelit faux Christmas Tree would have a Santa Baby theme. And what better colors to use with a Santa theme that the traditional Christmas colors of red, white, and green, mixed with a little gold and silver. I also wanted to incorporate the feeling of Santa’s Village, so I added faux snow…(really 2′ long micro-feather dusters). DESIGNER TIP: To add more depth and dimension to your Christmas Tree, try adding a variety (3-4 types) of Christmas sprigs. I just love the way the Christmas sprigs and the glittery gold curly ques add so much interests and color to my tree.

Family Room Fireplace and Cocktail Table Decor

Since the Christmas tree was fairly elaborate, I wanted to keep the fireplace mantel decor and cocktail table centerpiece simple. For the fireplace mantel, I used pine trees wrapped in burlap and little white churches, along with our Christmas stockings. And for the cocktail table, I placed two different wreaths (a grapevine wreath and a fir wreath) that I used as my base inside a tray, and then placed the apothecary with snow village and trees in the center. The great thing about using trays as part of your accessory grouping is that they not only help corral items, but it also helps make dusting an easier job. And I’m all about easy…especially this time of year!

Breakfast Nook

I love having some sort of table decor on my breakfast nook and dining room tables year round, and most of the time it’s something fairly simple. But during the holiday season, I really love to dress them up with creative place settings, linens, and centerpiece. Some years they’re more elaborate than others, and this year I have a good mix. I decided to keep the breakfast nook table centerpiece simple since the place settings and linens are the focal point of the table.

Just a quick FYI about me…I’m typically not a matchy-matchy kinda girl, as evident of my table setting and decor below. DESIGNER TIP: The key to mixing and matching patterns with ease is to pay attention to the size and scale of patterns, as well as colors. For example, you’ll notice that I’ve used four different patterns of table linens on my table – the red, white, and green tartan plaid table runner (more on that in a moment); the small red and white check dish towel; the red and white stripe dish towel; and the red, white, and silver snowflake napkin. They all work well together because of the red and white colors unite them, and the size and scale of the patterns all play nice together.

About that table runner and finding my unicorn!

Now about that table runner…it’s not really a table runner! I really had my mind set on a red, white, and green tartan plaid tablecloth for our breakfast room table, but I ran into two problems: (1) Finding an oval table cloth in any size is darn near impossible; and (2) Finding a specific colorway in tartan plaid (the red, white, and green that I coveted) is also a next to impossible task. Believe me, I searched everywhere!

Then one day (and by one day, I mean just two days ago!), I wondered into Stein Mart and decided to check out their linen section. You can imagine my excitement, and you might’ve even heard me squeal with delight, when I stumbled upon my unicorn of a tablecloth. The only problem was that it’s a 60″ x 104″ rectangular size. However, since it was 50% off, I decided to make due. I figured I could always fold in half to make a table throw or fold into thirds and use as a table runner. I’m so happy I purchased it because it’s absolutely perfect, and my breakfast room Christmas table settings and decor are exactly how I had pictured it in my head!

Before I leave the breakfast room, did you notice that my placemats aren’t really placemats? I wanted to add a touch of whimsy and a touch of the unexpected to my table settings this year, so when I stumbled upon these black slate cheese trays I knew I had found “the” thing. I just love using unexpected items in new and unusual ways! How about you? Do you ever use unexpected items in your table decor? I would love to hear/see what you’ve created that was out of “the norm”.

Guest Bath

I love adding a little Christmas decor in unexpected places, and the guest bathroom is one of those space. I like to keep it fairly simple in here though because I don’t won’t the countertop to get too clutter. You’ll notice that once again, I’ve used a decorative tray to corral all decorative accessories. DESIGNER TIP:  When using items of similar height in a vignette such as this, use everyday decor items as risers to vary the height of items to add depth and interest. For example, the nutcracker and glittered Christmas Trees are all very close in size and scale. But with the use of the book box and well-hidden risers, I was able to make the nutcracker the focal point and the other items are the supporting actresses. Do you decorate your guest bathroom for the holiday season?

Fun fact: I own at least a dozen authentic nutcrackers from Germany (specifically East Germany).

My very first job out of college was working as a corporate visual merchandiser for a large national jewelry chain. And part of my job was designing the Christmas decor packages for two out of their five divisions. One year, the theme for the more upscale division was The Nutcracker Ballet. And in keeping with the status of its affluent buyers, the jewelry chain only wanted to purchase authentic nutcrackers.

As you can imagine, that costs can add up rather quickly when you’re needing to decorate for 500 stores. To keep the costs down, we  had to purchase several thousand nutcrackers, which were to be used in the Christmas Trees, wreaths, and tabletop displays. The nutcrackers that were left over were sold to the company employees at a fraction of the costs. I’ve owned my beloved nutcrackers for nearly 30 years! Yikes, I guess I just aged myself! Oh well! By the way, the nutcracker in the photo above is not part of that collection, but I love him equally the same!
