Interior Design & Decorating Trends for 2023

Interior Design & Decorating Trends for 2023 | My 2023 Interior Design & Decor Predictions

Hello Friends,

Today, we’re talking about Interior Design & Decorating Trends for 2023. For the record, I have always had mixed feelings about annual interior design & decorating trends and color predictions.

I’m all in favor of refreshing one’s interior spaces to keep things current, but I loathe the notion that everyone should jump on board with the latest trends. I believe that if you stay true to your design aesthetics and color preferences you will always love spending time in your home. With that said, some “design trends” are really not trends in my opinion, but more so are simply great design choices.

In case you’re new to my blog, WELCOME! Here’s a quick note about me…

For the past three decades I’ve been designing and decorating luxury model homes and private residences. I’ve recently semi-retired, but still very passionate about interior design and decorating. And now, I finally have time to share my 35 years of knowledge with you! I laugh at the semi-retirement part because anyone who knows a thing or two about blogging and all things social media knows this can be a full-time job too!

If you would like to know more about my credentials and a few fun facts about me, you can find that here.

My Interior Design & Decorating Trend Predictions for 2023 and Beyond

Listed below in no particular order are things that I’ve taken note on over the past several months and see their continual rise in popularity, which makes me believe these will only gain momentum. Did you know that decorating trends usually have a lifespan of 2-5 years? Some last a little longer, but some of them last for only a short year? Crazy, right!?

#1 Luxe Living

Luxe living is not about expensive items, glam or glitzy spaces, but rather it’s about a refined and elevated approach to decorating. It’s all about mastering the mix of high and low (where to splurge and where to save) to create spaces that feel timeless and sophisticated, no matter what the design style may be.

These spaces will be curated and personal, with a mix of new and vintage/vintage-looking pieces and finishes. Performance fabrics, well-constructed furniture, and durable finishes are the main foundations in luxe living and will be essential for busy families and those with pet. The key points to remember are to design with classic silhouettes and keep trendy design elements to a minimum.

This beautiful Transitional Family Room by Melody Jurick of Melody Jurick Designs is right on trend in a number of ways. She’s introduced a grasscloth wallpaper in the breakfast nook; the color palette is very much on-trend; she’s using high performance fabrics that are perfect for families; and the remaining design elements are very client centric.

I have personally known Melody for several years, and her personality is just as delightful as her colorful interiors. Her work is absolutely gorgeous, which makes her a sought-after interior designer in North Texas. Be sure to follow her on Instagram @melodyjurickdesigns.

#2 – Personal Style-Driven Spaces

Thanks to Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, interior design & decorating blogs, as well as traditional and online magazines, interior design and decorating inspiration is more accessible than ever. This accessibility has led to an increased interest in homeowners leaning into and learning how to identify their personal design style(s).

I expect to see more designated spaces like this handsome Bourbon Room designed by Steffanie Danby Interiors. How fabulous is this space? This space is actually hitting on a few design trends – arched doorways, the return of earth tone paint colors, dark painted trim, ceiling details, and dark wood. I’m not a bourbon drinker, but I would love to lounge in this space and listen to all of the interesting stories that are bound to be told in here!

Steffanie has an incredible designer’s eye and creates sophisticated interiors that elegant and approachable. Be sure to follow her along on her Instagram account @steffanie_danby_interiors.

#3 – Painted Kitchen Cabinets Gain Momentum & White Kitchens Remain Popular

Expect to see a wide array of painted kitchen cabinets in blues and greens, from palest to the deepest of colors. I also expect white kitchens to remain popular due to their classic nature.

How gorgeous is this beautiful Lakefront Kitchen by Holly Gallagher with Gallagher Interiors? I’ve personally known Holly for several years and she is such a sweetheart. Her warm and friendly personality coupled with the absolutely gorgeous designs she creates has her in high demand in North Texas. Be sure to follow her along on Instagram @gallagher.interiors.

This large, beautiful kitchen has a few of the design trends that we’ll see continue to flourish in 2023 and beyond – coffered ceilings with inset detail, oversized island pendants, mixed metal finishes, cabinets up to the ceiling, two-tone painted cabinets, and a nod to coastal design elements.

#4 – Embracing Color Again!

For the past few years, we’ve seen a ton of neutral spaces – white on white on cream on grey, with maybe a color or two here and there. Thankfully, color is coming back in a big way! We’ll see color on cabinetry, walls, home furnishings, and accessories.

Expect to see rich, moody, luxurious jewel tones (green, blue, burgundy, plum, and more), mixed with grounded earth tone backdrops, such as this gorgeous living room below designed by my friend, Veronica Soloman of Casa Vilora Interiors. Veronica creates the most stunning rooms and I simply absolutely adore her bold use of color and pattern in her designs. Be sure to give her follow on Instagram at Casa Vilora.

#5 – Bold Use Of Pattern Inspired By The Past

Bold use of pattern is coming back! We’ll see 1970’s & 1980’s inspired patterns with today’s color palettes, like this beautiful Breakfast Nook by Steffanie Danby Interiors. I absolutely love how she used this large print wallpaper to make this space live large!

This beautiful space she designed is covering a few design trends – arched doorway, rich navy paint color, traditional furniture, statement lighting, and of course, that gorgeous wallpaper! Expect to see big bold patterns on wallpaper, bedding, window treatments, and more.

Be sure to follow Steffanie on her Instagram @steffanie_danby_interiors

#6 – European-Inspired Interiors & Exteriors

European-Inspired interiors have long been loved by many and the love affair doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. This style covers a large geographical area, but most of the influences we’ll see are from France, UK, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Germany, and Sweden.

I expect to see a rise in popularity of plaster walls with limewash finishes, reminiscent of Italian villas and French Country chateaus. We can also anticipate the use of natural elements used both on interiors and exteriors – stone, brick, wood – and we’ll see a mixing of modern with vintage pieces. The color palettes will mimic the region one is inspired by, so expect to see mostly muted color palettes with the occasional splash of color.

Allow Me to Introduce My Friends

Crystal of Sweet Valley Acres is a northern girl, living in Canada. Crystal has been artist and dreamer since birth, and loves creating beautiful spaces in her home and garden for her family and friends to enjoy. She also loves pushing her builder husband, Bentley to his very limits when it comes to building and renovating. After 33 years of marriage and taking on 11 homes that were the worst house on the block and turning them into show stoppers along with three new builds later, Crystal has a wealth of knowledge and experience. In addition, she has won many awards for garden design and used to own a home and garden decor store for many years.

Lynn of Living Large in a Small House, lives on lakefront property in Illinois. She has a BA in Interior Design and was the owner of a full-service interior design studio for over 10 years. She specialized in high-end residential new build and renovation interior design, working as a team member with architects and contractors. Since 2000 she has consulted exclusively for friends and family.

Sheri of Savvy in the Suburbs, lives in Texas, not too far from me and we’re friends in real life! Sheri had a very successful interior design business for many years and is now enjoying fluffing her own nest, spending time with her family – three married children and five grandchildren, and growing in her relationship with the Lord. She relishes family time and believes in the old adage: God first, family second, all else third. She’s enjoying the opportunity to share this truth as well as her years of design expertise and love of all things home.
