Are you looking to refresh and redecorate your home in the new year, but don’t want to spend a fortune? Look no further, my friend!

Today, I’m sharing simple, budget-friendly home makeover ideas that you can start doing immediately. Most of these ideas are free and only require some elbow grease, while the other ideas can be accomplished even with a tight budget.

From rearranging furniture to hosting a home décor swap party with your fellow home decorating enthusiasts and so much more, these ideas will transform your home into a stylish and inviting retreat that you’ll love spending time in every day. Bonus designer tips included too!!!

Before I jump into sharing all the fabulous ideas and tips, I should mention that it’s time for our February edition of Designing Women Tell All. This month, Crystal and I are discussing ways to refresh and redecorate your home in the new year.

In case this is your first visit, DWTA is a monthly series where we choose interior design and decorating subject matter to discuss. We share our knowledge along with tips, tricks, successes and failures on everything home and garden design. It’s informative, light-hearted and fun, so you’ll definitely want to follow along!

Let’s dive in and discover the many ways to revitalize your home for the new year.

Declutter, Assess, and Evaluate

The first key step to take before diving into any home refresh & redecorating project is to declutter, assess, and evaluate your current spaces. Clear out any unnecessary items that no longer fit your style, bring you joy, or simply don’t work within the space.

Declutter bookcases, shelves, tabletops, fireplace mantel, and countertops. Assess and evaluate the condition of your home furnishings and home décor. Does anything need repair? Are there items that can be painted, repurposed, or used in another room? Do you have items that you haven’t used for years? If so, sell or donate them.

Designer Tip: Label three large plastic laundry baskets with “Keep”, “Donate”, and “Trash”. While you’re decluttering, place smaller items in the appropriate basket. This allows for easy organizing, donation drop-offs, and clean up.

Rearrange Furniture Layout for a Fresh Look

You might be surprised at how much of a difference a simple furniture rearrangement can make in refreshing your space. Not only does it give your space a new perspective, but it can also allow for better flow and functionality. And it’s free!

Live with the changes for a week or two to see how it works for you and your family. Adjust where necessary.

Designer Tip: Before you move a single piece of furniture, you can make this task easier by either hand drafting your room and furniture pieces on graph paper or use one of the free room planners found online. The two online planners that I find are the most intuitive and easiest for beginners are Plan Your Room and Room Sketcher.

Shop Your Home

After you have decluttered, assessed, evaluated, and rearranged you might be anxious to start anew with brand new accessories. Before you spend a dime on new things, I suggest shopping your home first.

If you’re anything like me, you probably have home décor squirreled away here, there, and everywhere…and you just might have forgotten about those long-lost items you once loved. That forgotten vase in the attic or those throw pillow covers tucked away in a closet might just be what you need to pull a new look together.

Designer Tip: Whether you’re doing a few rooms or whole home refresh & redecorating project, I suggest gathering all your décor items together in one location and group items according to category…i.e., mirrors, artwork and wall décor, candleholders, ginger jars, picture frames, decorative bowls, trays, etc.

Doing this allows you to see your complete home decor collection with fresh eyes. It also allows you to begin picturing these items used in different rooms and styled in different ways; therefore, giving you a fresh new look!

Infuse Your Space with Personality and Style

Infusing your space with personality and style is a journey of self-expression and creativity. It’s about surrounding yourself with the things that bring you joy and comfort, and creating a space that feels authentically yours.

Consider adding a statement wall and décor pieces to your collection. Another creative idea is to create a personalized wall gallery.

One of my personal favorite wall gallery ideas is to hang gallery wall shelves and to mix artwork, photography, and sentimental mementos that tell your story. This type of gallery wall offers maximum flexibility, allowing you to change pieces with ease, based on your mood or the season.

I’m currently immersed in a project to completely revamp my daughter’s bedroom suite. Last fall, we undertook a comprehensive remodel of her bathroom, and now our focus has shifted to her sleeping quarters. With all the furniture pieces already in place, the stage is set for the next phase of transformation…the brick accent wall and wall decor.

The quick concept design board I created for my daughter’s bedroom makeover encapsulates a harmonious blend of colors, textures, and furnishings that align with the vision we have for the space. I will be sharing these room transformations in an upcoming blog post, so stay tuned!

Side note: Typically, I prefer to do all of the construction projects simultaneously (bathroom remodel and brick accent wall, in this case) because if you’re stirring up dust you might as well only do it all at once, especially if you’re working with adjacent spaces. Sometimes however, best laid plans have to pivot, which is exactly what happened here.

Designer Tip: Create a concept design board to serve as a visual roadmap for your room makeover journey. It can be as simple as the one above or more elaborate; your choice. I also recommend creating a separate board with links to all products so that once you have finalized the plans, you can simply click and order everything with ease.

By the way, I use PowerPoint or Publisher to create my boards. In fact, I’ve used these tools to create whole home design plans for myself and clients for years. What I love about using these tools is that they’re super easy to use. Plus, everything is saved in one location that I can (1) refer back to; (2) tweak and refine as needed; and (3) keep track of online resources and shopping links. If you want to have your digital plan on-the-go with you just email a copy to yourself!

Recycle, Reuse & Repurpose Furniture and Home Décor Accents

Instead of discarding furniture items that no longer work in one space, consider using them in unconventional ways.  For example, if you need more closed storage space in your living room, use a tall chest that’s normally a piece of furniture you would find in the bedroom. Using a dresser instead of a sideboard in a dining room is another idea to ponder.

If you have furniture, lamps, or other decorative items that you still love but look a little tired and dated, consider refinishing or painting them. This will not only breathe new life to these pieces but will also add unique character and charm to your home.

Rotate Your Home Décor

Embrace the concept of periodically rotating your home décor pieces – rugs, accessories, artwork, mirrors, and even small furniture – from room to room. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the fresh perspective and renewed sense of fondness this simple change can bring.

This intentional rotation not only revitalizes your home’s ambiance but also encourages you to appreciate your décor collection in a whole new light. It prompts creativity and resourcefulness as you experiment with different arrangements and combinations, unlocking hidden potential within your belongings.

Moreover, this practice aligns with sustainable living principles by maximizing the utility and longevity of each item in your home while reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact.

Host a Home Décor Swap Party With Friends

Organize and host a home décor swap party with friends who share a passion for home decorating. Gather all the décor pieces that no longer inspire you or fit your current design style and encourage your guests to do the same. On decor swap party day, set up designated areas for different categories to make browsing easier.

During the party, allow guests to mingle and explore the offerings, fostering an atmosphere of excitement and discovery. Encourage swapping and trading among attendees, promoting the idea of giving new life to previously loved items.

Not only does a home décor swap party provide a chance to revitalize your home’s aesthetic, but it also promotes sustainability by giving unwanted items a new home instead of discarding them. Plus, it’s a great way to bond with friends over shared interests and creative expression.

Add Statement Light Fixtures In Key Locations

Enhance the atmosphere and aesthetic of your space by replacing tired and outdated light fixtures and chandeliers with striking statement pieces in key locations.

Whether it’s dazzling pendant lights above your kitchen island or a breathtakingly beautiful chandelier in your foyer, these changes will instantly elevate the style and ambiance of your home.

Designer Tip: To achieve a sophisticated and curated aesthetic steer clear of perfectly matched finishes. Embrace the art of contrast by strategically juxtaposing different finishes, textures, colors, and materials throughout your space. This approach not only adds character but also fosters a sense of dynamic harmony, creating a space that feels thoughtfully designed and visually captivating.

Update Cabinetry Hardware

Elevate the style and functionality of kitchen and bathroom spaces by updating the hardware on your cabinets. Whether you’re aiming for a modern and sleek look or a more rustic and vintage feel, swapping out the hardware can make a significant impact.

Be sure to consider the style of your cabinet and overall aesthetics of your space when selecting new cabinetry hardware. As far as finishes, choose a finish that harmonizes with other elements in the space. Don’t forget about functionality. Opt for hardware that not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also feels comfortable to use. Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of details. Small accents like backplates or decorative screws can add an extra layer of refinement to your cabinetry.

Don’t Forget The Power of Paint

Paint is not only the least expensive decorating tool, but it’s also the perfect DIY project. With a simple coat of paint, you can effortlessly breathe new life into any space, instantly transforming its ambiance and character.

Beyond its decorative function, paint also boasts practical benefits. It serves as a protective barrier, shielding surfaces from wear and tear, moisture, and stains, thus prolonging the lifespan of your walls, furniture, and accessories. Furthermore, paint offers the flexibility to experiment with trends and styles without the commitment of permanent change. Whether you’re drawn to bold accent walls, subtle neutrals, or trendy color schemes, the ability to easily repaint allows you to adapt and evolve your decor to suit your evolving tastes and preferences

Bonus Tips When Starting From Scratch

Whether you’re embarking on a fresh start with a brand-new aesthetic or taking your first steps into the world of home decorating, one invaluable tool that can streamline and elevate your process is the creation of concept design boards. These visual representations serve as a roadmap, guiding you through the exciting journey of crafting a cohesive and personalized space.

The beauty of concept design boards lies in their ability to provide clarity and coherence to your vision. By seeing all elements laid out together, you can easily identify synergies, refine your choices, and ensure that every component contributes harmoniously to the overall look and feel of your space.

Designer Tips: Once you’ve finalized your design concept, start gathering swatches and samples to ensure that materials and finishes are as expected and capture the essence of your desired aesthetic. Be sure to save all links to products to make your shopping experience swift and efficient.
